Is Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip a phone with a good camera? [Review DxOMark]

Galaxy Z Flip camera review, by DxOMark

El Galaxy z flip, mobile launched in February of this year as one of the best folding of Samsung, is one of the most interesting devices of this year, having the unique inward fold design.

The phone stands out for many things, and one of them has to do with its photographic section, which is made up of a double main sensor of 12 MP (f / 1.8) + 12 MP (f / 2.2) wide angle. The terminal also has a 10 MP selfie camera, but this time we will focus on the main ones since they are the ones that DxOMark has reviewed and analyzed in detail. We detail the review of the platform below.

This is everything that DxOMark highlights about the camera of Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip

With an overall camera score of 105 given by DxOMark, The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip ranks in the middle of the top twenty smartphones in the platform's database. It's a respectable performance, generally speaking, that ranks right behind Apple's iPhone XS Max, which came in second in testing two years ago. The Flip's camera nails the basics, with accurate exposures and a generally accurate white balance.

Generally, the phone also handles high contrast scenes well, offering good dynamic range, although the DxOMark team of experts did notice some clipping of highlights and shadows in extremely contrasting situations. However, in most situations, even indoors, the Flip offers pleasant color reproduction, although in outdoor scenes the colors are sometimes a bit desaturated.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip handles noise quite well both indoors and outdoors. Although it is sometimes visible, the noise is not intrusive. Outdoors in good light, the Galaxy Z Flip generally successfully combines noise suppression and detail retention, delivering photos with good texture and low noise. Mind you, in some situations, the Flip unnecessarily sacrifices detail, smoothing out the texture that other phones manage to retain.

Poor autofocus

The Flip's autofocus performance is a mixed bag. The good news is that it is accurate and consistent, but the bad news is that it is slow, disappointing, as AF speed is rarely an issue for high-end phones these days.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip scored an artifact sub-score of 70, which isn't bad, but it's hardly a leader in its class. Loud sounding artifacts are common, and softness creeps into the corners of the frame. Flare, ghosting, colored fringes, and moiré occasionally show up.

How about the ultra wide angle camera?

The Galaxy Flip Z's ultra-wide camera gets a very good rating of 43 in DxOMark tests, outperforming many phones that have higher overall scores (including current first-place support, the Huawei P40 Pro). It has a 12mm equivalent focal length, which is wider than many other phones, so it can pack a lot into the frame. Colors are pleasing, exposure is accurate, and dynamic range is wide both indoors and outdoors.

While the Galaxy Z Flip is happy to go wide, it's not that keen on going for long. Without a telephoto module and seemingly without any fancy gimmicks like Google's Super Res Zoom, the Galaxy Z Flip's zoom is a simple matter of cropping and sampling image data from the main camera. The results are not prettyas details are rapidly reduced as the zoom factor increases, along with visible noise and loud timbre artifacts as sharpening algorithms move less and less with visual feedback.

The bokeh effect is regular

The Flip gets an average Bokeh score of 50, behind the typical performance of high-end phones. There are depth estimation artifacts; for example, sometimes the algorithm will keep the subject's face sharp but blur the body.

On the bright side, the shape of the bokeh is usually nice and the noise is distributed evenly (Some phones blur noise by simulating background blur, making the subject look abnormally noisy.) However, the blur gradient itself sometimes seems unnatural.

The night photos you get are good

When the lights turn off, the Galaxy Z Flip does a reasonably good job with flash portraits, setting a good exposure of the subject and allowing the background to burn out a bit so it's not just a black void. However, on closer inspection, details are low and noise is high.

Night cityscapes aren't too impressive, with low levels of detail and a fair amount of noise. Left alone, the mobile will sometimes fire its flash in an attempt to illuminate your shot of the city (this is generally not a good idea, DxOMark highlights). That said, the details and noise are on a similar level to the iPhone 11 Pro Max. The Galaxy Note 10+ 5G records less detail than the Flip, but offers a cleaner image.

Video, an important section

When it comes to recording videos, the Galaxy Z Flip offers rich, pleasing colors and accurate exposure. In a welcome change from the still image performance of the phone, the autofocus is quite fast and remains constant. Outdoors, stabilization is quite effective. Its overall video score of 96 is good, even if it lags a bit behind many of the latest high-end phones.

On the downside, dynamic range is noticeably restrictedsomething to keep in mind when shooting high-contrast scenes. Strong luminance and chroma noise also degrade image quality in all conditions, with low light, unsurprisingly, the worst.

Testing also revealed that while stabilization works well outdoors, it's another story indoors, with marked shake production in the walking video test. Sharpness sometimes varies in follow-up shots.
