POPTEL P10 Analysis

POPTEL P10 rear

Today it's time to tell you about a new smartphone from POPTEL, specifically the POPTEL P10. A terminal clearly oriented to the segment of the rugged smartphones. But we like to see how, even being an all-terrain phone, it does not abandon the aesthetics of conventional phones.

We are used to seeing ruggedized that for regular use are a bit oversized. They have rough shapes, very sharp angles, larger size, greater weight and are thicker. The POPTEL P10 departs from this rugged phone aesthetic, but does so by offering high-level performance, and not only in terms of resistance.

POPTEL P10 the most elegant ruggedized

As we say, POPTEL's P10 is possibly the most rugged smartphone Elegant and distinguished of the moment. It offers very soft lines both on the front and on the sides and back. We could say that, at first glance, it reminds us a lot of the Nomu M6, another smartphone created with the same pretensions but with much lower performance.

As the months go by we see how the family of all-terrain phones continues to grow. More and more firms are joining, and more and more options that we find when looking for a device with these characteristics. But the POPTEL P10 is different to the rest.

This summer we had the opportunity to try another rugerizado from the same firm, the POPTEL P9000 MAX. A smartphone that left us good feelings in terms of its performance and its operation. But as for the physical aspect if it was within what we can expect if we look for a ruggedized one.

El POPTEL P10 has arrived for distinguish yourself by your style between much rougher and bulkier phones. But providing the same benefits, if not better, than any rugged that we can look at.

A different option

If you are looking for a smartphone resistant to dust, water and shocks, you already know rugged phones. And if you have seen the options that the market proposes and none convinces you, today we bring you an alternative that I could do it. If you think that a rugerizado is not a smartphone for everyday use As a regular smartphone, you may be wrong.

POPTEL P10 rear

We are seeing how all-terrain smartphones are evolving very quickly. This market segment is continually developing. Exists increasing demand for this type of device, but not all users agree to carry such large "gizmos". Carrying a smartphone weighing more than 1/4 kilogram every day is something to think about.

That is why we have liked POPTEL's commitment to the P10 so much. Without giving up any benefits in terms of tightness or resistance to shocks, it presents an evolved model of what might be rugged futures. A smartphone that represents a fusion between conventional smartphone and smartphone all terrain.

Si want or do you need a more resistant smartphone than a conventional one. And you are one of those you are not willing to carry such a large device the POPTEL P10 is what you were looking for. A rugged that does not look like a ruggedized and that has, among many other features, with IP68 certification.

We show you the POPTEL P10

The physical aspect of this device acquires an important relevance given the market segment in which it is framed. And it is almost a novelty not to find metal plates or big plastic edges. A strong enough housing and rubber caps on the input ports have been enough not to have to give up on design. The POPTEL P10 goes unnoticed in the office.

POPTEL P10 in office

In his front we found one 5,5-inch IPS LCD screen with 18: 9 aspect ratio. On its sides we see reduced frames, something that does not happen in its lower and upper part. Although if we compare with other rugged ones, the "harnessed" part of the front panel obtains a much higher percentage.

In the upper part of the screen, without the need for a notch, the proximity sensors, speaker, and front camera which has a resolution of 8 Mpx. A camera that does not stand out for the quality it offers but that will be able to fulfill with a note when taking a selfie in good light.

If we look at his Right side, we can see, in the upper part, a single elongated button that serves us for the volume controls. Just below this, the P10 features the lock and on / off button.

POPTEL P10 right side

At left side find the slot for cards. A slot where we can simultaneously insert two SIM cards as well as a memory card. Something that is not usually very common. And below this another button that we did not expect. Normally, in a high percentage of the terminals that we have tested, the manufacturers choose to include as few buttons as possible.

This dedicated button is configure you, and we can attribute the function that we consider more comfortable or important. By default, we find a direct access to the camera, something that makes the operation necessary to take a capture much faster.

POPTEL P10 left side

La upper part of the device is completely diaphanous, but this fortunately is not synonymous with the existence of any absence. In the lower part of POPTEL P10, in addition to charging port, in mini USB format, we see with pleasure how the 3.5 Jack connector for headphones. There is no excess, it does not bother and we love that there are still firms that keep it.

In the rear of the POPTEL P10 we find the camera single lens, the LED flash, and just below, in a line of three, the fingerprint reader. At the bottom, just below the signature logo, is the single speaker, which neither stands out nor disappoints. We can say that it performs well. It also highlights the texture of a plastic material well treated to result anti-slip.

Of course, as although it does not seem like it, we are facing a rugged smartphone, both ports are protected with a rubber tab. A protection that serves to guarantee the watertightness offered by its IP68 certification. And that unlike what happens with other smartphones, we can remove it much more easily than expected.

Box contents

One of our favorite moments comes when we receive a smartphone, unboxing. And we proceed to see everything we find inside the POPTEL P10 box. As always, in the foreground we find the phone itself. And the first thing that stands out, as we have already said, and knowing that it is a “ruged phone” is its design and its light weight.

POPTEL P10 box contents

But we also found some more things, almost all expected. In two small boxes Separately inside the main box are all the accessories. In one of them we find the electrical current connector, as well as the cable that will serve for that we can use our smartphone as an external battery to charge another device.

In the other box is the USB cable, which as we have commented is NOT USB type C. And a pleasant surprise that is increasingly in disuse ... Headphones! The POPTEL firm we like, among many other things, because it continues to bet on the 3.5 Jack connector. And also because it usually includes among the accessories that accompany its devices a signature headset.

As an extra, and it is something that is always appreciated, we have a plastic screen protector. This is not a tempered glass, but a gift scratch protection never hurts. In short we like to find accessories that many other firms have decided not to "give away" for years.

The POPTEL P10 screen

POPTEL P10 screen

In the POPTEL P10 we find a screen with a 5,5 inch size. We have been able to test smartphones with larger screens. But if we compare this terminal with other rugged ones, this screen size, due to the smaller size of the phone, seems more appropriate. So while the POPTEL P10 still has room on its front panel to “stretch” its screen, the 5,5-inch is not bad.

We are facing a IPS LCD screen. And it is in the resolution where we can find one of the weak points of this device. The POPTEL P10 screen has 640 x 1280 HD resolution. The quality level is somewhat poor since almost any terminal in the mid-range offers Full HD resolution.

And if we look at the density of pixels per inch that it offers, the thing does not improve. With an average of 260 pixels per inch density the POPTEL P10 does not come out very well. As an example of comparison, we can refer to another rugged smartphone from the firm itself such as the POPTEL P9000 Max that we were lucky to test and that offered up to 441 dpi.

We look inside the POPTEL P10

It is time to tell you about what the POPTEL P10 offers us at the power level. To do this we look at your processor. For this POPTEL device choose MediaTek, specifically, the new processor MediaTek Helio P23. A processor that firms such as Blackview, Ulephone or Nomu have also used.

A processor octa-core with 4 x 2.0 GHz ARM Cortex A53 CPU plus 4 x 1.5 GHz ARM Cortex A53. Of which we can say that it offers a excellent performance with this smartphone. We have had no problems with multitasking, nor with any application or game. We have not experienced overheating, and we have not been "hung" at any time.

For graphics, the POPTEL P10 has a ARM Mali-G71 MP2. It is not that it is of low quality, only that the resolution offered by the screen does not give more than what it offers us. Undoubtedly a graphics card that could give more of itself to have a higher density and screen resolution.

With regards to RAM, we see how this device is well equipped with some 4 GB, something that at least duplicates what the first rugged ones on the market could offer. To complete the section, we have a capacity of 64GB storage. More than enough memory, and even more thanks to the possibility of expanding it using a micro SD card.

With such equipment it is normal for the POPTEL P 10 to flow wonderfully. We have felt a very satisfactory user experience. And the level of fluidity that it is capable of offering is really pleasant even with demanding use of the phone.

A camera that offers good results.

POPTEL P10 camera

Although it seems that it is already mandatory to install a dual camera on new phones, this is not yet the case. There are still phones on the market capable of "surviving" with single rear lens. The POPTEL P10 is an example of this, and although its camera is nothing extraordinary, it is able to fully comply and offer good results.

The POPTEL firm has trusted Sony to have a sensor solvent and that it manages to keep up with the rest of the device. The chosen one is the Sony IMX135 Exmor RS, a sensor CMOS type, which has worked well on other smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy A5, some LG models, or the Sony Xperia Z, among many others have opted for this sensor. Which is accompanied by a single LED flash 2.2 Gso Lens with more power than expected.

In the section of the POPTEL P10 camera there is an aspect that has surprised us a lot, and unfortunately for the worse. The photo camera application is nefarious. We had not come across all the reviews that we have made in the last with such a simple camera application. The options it presents seem totally out of date.

Among the options offered by the camera we find photo or video ... and that's it! The green thing is that it does not look like a smartphone from 2.018. As "extra" we can use  some pre-installed filters to give some color effect to our photos or videos.

Even so, although the options that the camera offers in terms of configurations are practically non-existent. The sensor with which the POPTEL P10 has he does not defend himself badly. And is able to offer good results in photos taken with autofocus. Here we see how, in addition, the definition level is quite good and colors that it throws are quite realistic.

POPTEL P10 exterior photo

Even on a cloudy dayWhen the lighting is not the best, when taking a photo with the POPTEL P10, we are pleased to see that the results are very decent. Undoubtedly the sensor defends how can a section of photography that tarnishes an application left there with great reluctance.

POPTEL P10 battery and autonomy

In the battery section, when we talk about a “rugged phone”, as a general rule we talk about great capacities. We have tested smartphones that reach up to 10.000 mAh. And this is possible, especially in this sector of the market, since the size or weight of the devices have a secondary place.

In the case of the POPTEL P10, being a ruggedized one that stands out among the majority for being much thinner and lighter, it is normal that it has opted for a smaller battery. Specifically, we have a 3.600 mAh battery. A battery that is well below what we have seen in other off-road phones. But that compared to conventional smartphones is not bad at all.

In short, we have a autonomy that without problems is able to endure more than a full day. Something acceptable for any current device. Although given the outdoor destination of this type of smartphone, it may be a bit short.

POPTEL P10 details and extras

As we have been saying, the POPTEL P10 is not a conventional rugged smartphone. His physical appearance, his weight and his size stand out from the rest. But in addition to this, it also stands out for offering benefits that make you earn money. Some of the most resistant phones and other extras that we are happy to find.

Tightness is one of the great advantages of this type of device. And the POPTEL P10 has something that not everyone can boast about, IP68 certification. Thanks to this, the P10 can be immersed in water up to a meter and a half for half an hour. Peace of mind for users who frequent aquatic environments.

Another advantage of this type of device is the shock resistance. We have seen in other models how to gain resistance the shape and size of smartphones grows disproportionately. In this case, the shock resistance is not less, but the size of the phone is. Combining both qualities is always positive.

To be able to count on the NFC technology it is always an important extra on any device. Knowing the facilities that it offers how it can be pay the bill with the mobile, access control, and an infinity of possibilities. One more point in favor of the POPTEL P10 that expands connectivity and the possibilities it offers.

And one of the qualities that most value those who make their smartphone another tool when going out to the mountains. In addition to having a useful compass. The advanced positioning technology with GPS  + Glonass by dual satellite it is much more accurate. This way you will always follow the right direction.

Pros and Cons of the POPTEL P10

Pros

The design of this smartphone moves away from the exaggerated and rude forms of rugged phones, some smoother, cleaner lines are to be appreciated. A rugged that doesn't look like it?

La NFC technology it always adds up, whatever the device, point for the POPTEL P10.

  • A more practical weight and size for everyday use
  • NFC connectivity that greatly expands your possibilities
  • IP 68 certification

Cons

La Screen resolution it does not reach a minimum currently almost mandatory, although in its size, the HD quality does not look bad, it could improve considerably.

La camera app It is the worst we have found in a smartphone in recent times. Fortunately, we can install any other that will surely improve this aspect.

The appearance of the battery, being a rugged smartphone, it is somewhat scarce. Having 3.600 mAh is not bad, but insufficient if we want to use the smartphone during a weekend in nature.
