MWC 2014, Samsung presents the Samsung Galaxy S5

Samsung Galaxy S5

One of the dates on our calendar was February 24th. On the one hand, the MWC 2014 gave its starting gun, and therefore many manufacturers would take the opportunity to present their models. We have already seen the Sony Xperia Z2 and the new Nokia X range with Android. Finally it was time to presentation of the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Over the last few months, many rumors have circulated, and even at the last minute we have been able to see what the design of Samsung's new battle banner is like. And now we know all the secrets of the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Same design as its predecessors

Samsung Galaxy S5

In principle, an innovative design was expected with the intention of captivating those users who were disappointed to see that the design of the Samsung Galaxy S4 was the same as its predecessor. Nothing is further from reality. Being delicate I will say that the Samsung Galaxy S5 maintains the design of the previous models, turning to polycarbonate again, a very resistant plastic, but plastic after all.

Although in this case they resort to imitation leather which they tested with the Note 3 and Note 10.1. Also, like the S4, the side panels have a metal frame that gives the device a more solid look. A disappointment for those of us who were hoping that Samsung would finally start using higher quality materials.

Its water resistance stands out, with its IPS67 certification that allows the device to be submerged one and a half meters for 30 minutes, just like the Sony models. Now the micro USB connector will have a small cap so that water does not enter if we submerge it.

And we cannot forget the fingerprint sensor, like the one on the iPhone 5S. In this case, it will serve to unlock the phone and make future payments through Paypal. It will also allow you to register up to three different users. So far we see that the news are simply ideas copied from the competition. We started bad.

At least they have innovated a bit in the colors available, since the Samsung Galaxy S5 it will be available in white, black, gold and blue.

Samsung Galaxy S5 will control our pulse

One of the highlights of the Seoul-based manufacturer's new workhorse is a heart rate monitor, located below the camera, on the back of the device. You just have to place the index or middle finger and in less than ten seconds the Samsung Galaxy S5 will indicate the heart rate.

This topic is already more interesting because the interaction with the application S Health it will give enough play. In addition, this application receives an update that will allow it to be synchronized with the company's watches or the new Samsung Gear Fit.

5.1-inch AMOLED screen

Samsung Galaxy S5

The guys at Samsung keep the screen size, with 5.1 inches, without changing the resolution, so it will remain Full HD. Although there are already Chinese models with higher resolution, the Korean manufacturer considers that it is not necessary to increase the quality of its panels. We will have to wait to see a Samsung with 2K resolution.

2.5 Ghz quad-core processor and 2 GB of RAM

The new Korean beast will beat thanks to a 2.5GHz quad-core processor, along with 2GB of RAM. Here I expected 3GB like the Note 3. Big mistake. Another fatal flaw lies in its 2.800mAh battery. Samsung promises 10 hours of browsing and up to 12 hours of video playback. Luckily the battery is removable, in case it lasts less than what the manufacturer says ...

There will be two models available, a version with 16GB of storage and another with 32GB, although both models will be able to expand their memory through microSD cards. Android 4.4.2 will be in charge

16 megapixel camera with Selective Focus

Samsung Galaxy S5

The lenses that integrate Samsung's high-end devices usually offer very good performance and the Samsung Galaxy S5 was not going to be less. In this case we find a 16 megapixel module, which allows you to record video in 4K format.

They have significantly improved the shutter speed, which now takes 300ms to focus in addition to integrating Selective Focus, which allows you to focus after you have taken the shot. Highlights the HDR mode that will now allow us to vSee in real time how the photo would look using this tool.

Another big mistake, in my humble opinion, is the 2.1 megapixel front camera. The competition begins to take into account that more and more people use services like Skype to make video calls and therefore are incorporating front cameras with higher resolution. Samsung also does not consider this aspect important, as we can see.

Price and Availability

Samsung Galaxy S5

The Samsung Galaxy S5 will hit the market throughout the month of April and, although they have not said anything about the price, its approximate price will be around 699 euros.

The presentation left me cold, very cold. I expected much more, something innovative in terms of design and materials, but I have come across more of the same. Is this phone worth buying for the heart rate sensor, fingerprint reader, and camera upgrade? I am sure that many users will not change their phone, as happened with the jump from the Samsung Galaxy S3 to the Samsung Galaxy S4 if there is so little news.

What do you think? ¿You have also been disappointed in the new Samsung Galaxy S5? Do you think they have innovated enough?

A disappointment for those of us who have the S4 and believed that with the S5 there would be a leap in design and software.
So much so that I am not going to change it and if I do it will be for a Nexus.
Very very disappointed and also the number here in Spain carries an award.
For the cu.o I put it Samsung.

hahaha, well yes. I'm afraid that Samsung has made a huge mistake, they already sneaked us in with the jump from S3 to S4, but this time the customer will not go through the hoop, and now that there are more and more facilities to acquire a Nexus device (available in stores physics), Samsung is going to learn a basic lesson: don't laugh at your audience.

As an S4 owner… tremendously disappointed. I do not think I will try a Samsung again ... it is making me much more useful in the Sony Z2.

exactly the Sony Xperia Z2 is better !!!!

  5.   All of this said

Still I am a loyal user of an S4 and I am disappointed by the S5, but I would not run to Sony as their updates take time and their equipment is huge, wasted space between the screen and the frames, and I forgot, very heavy.

Well, when you see the videoreview that we are preparing you will be amazed with the Z2's camera!

Have you realized that the significant changes in terms of design and technology are being presented by Samsung in its note series?
When s2 came out, they surprised with the note
When the s3 came out, they jumped to 2g of ram in the note 3 with a 4-core processor and with the possibility of lte at the same time.
The s4 came out which was the first big disappointment but I think they corrected the path with the note 3 with its 3g ram and 2.3 speed.
Now with the s5 (indignation) to wait for the note 4 that I already flatly stay in this line of devices.

an apology, i meant note 2 in the galaxy s3 paragraph, greetings.

      1.    Alfonso of Fruits said

Well yes, I do not understand your politics the truth. In addition, the Samsung Galaxy S5 has 2GB of RAM when the Note 3 has 3GB ... Yes, with 2GB it surely has more than enough, but at least looking at the specifications gives the feeling that they have improved, more if we take into account that in principle, the S5 is the company's new workhorse. And the Note 4 until October nothing at all ...
