Huawei FreeLace, we analyze the latest Huawei headphones

During the presentation of the P30 Series that took place in n Paris and that you could continue with us, the Chinese firm left some other product dedicated to audio that we already have in our hands, an example is the Huawei FreeLace, the Bluetooth headphones with which the brand intends to set a precedent for the entry of brands generalists in this type of headphones so represented in points of sale such as Amazon.

Stay with us to discover our reviews of the Huawei FreeLace, Huawei's latest wireless headphones that are going to give a lot to talk about.

As always, we are going to focus on a multitude of aspects such as design, quality of materials and even autonomy, however, we recommend that you go through the video that leads this analysis so that you can see some features in full operation and so absolutely nothing escapes you. Without further delay, we proceed with the analysis of the Huawei FreeLace, a product that Huawei intends to democratize and above all to centralize taking into account the immense competition that exists in the market.

Materials and design: A continuous commitment

At the design level, it must be said that Huawei has not risked much, however, it has opted rather to use a series of materials that try to make the product something more "round". These headphones have two small metal bases that end with the thickest connection, they are made of aluminum and give the headphones greater stability when using them as a necklace. They continue with flat rubbers that prevent tangles to finish in a button-style headset with slight curvature in the extreme area where the sound emanates for greater comfort. The headphones themselves are also made of aluminum and obviously have different sizes of rubbers to adapt them to each user.

The right module is the one that houses a keypad to manage multimedia control, as well as a port that can be pulled out to show a male USB-C connection, This will allow us to automatically connect them to any Android device, as well as charge them through the extended USB-A that is included in the box, however, we do not have a network adapter, we will have to use any smartphone, laptop or adapter available. This hybrid USB-C connection is precisely one of the points that Huawei has wanted to highlight the most at the level of innovation, and the truth is that it is so far the most elegant way we have found.

We will be able to buy them in four different finishes: Moonlight Silver, Emerald Green, Amber Sunrise and Graphite Black, as with the range of mobile phones, Huawei is betting on color to satisfy the tastes of any user.

Huawei HiPair and its innovative connection mechanism

As with any Bluetooth headset, simply keeping the power button pressed for a long time will start the «pairing» mode which will allow us to search for them directly from any device that has a Bluetooth connection, however, taking advantage of this USB-C connection, Huawei has wanted to innovate a little more.

If we connect these headphones to our smartphone through USB-C directly, a small screen will open that will give us the possibility of connecting them without the need for pairings And in just a few seconds, we have verified that it is actually as simple as it seems on paper. Once paired, we can quickly access the data on autonomy provided by the device as well as activate or deactivate different of its characteristics, that is, choose if we want all the sound to sound through them or only that of the multimedia content or calls, maximum customization for headphones that have a life of their own.,

Technical characteristics and sound quality

We have For each earpiece, a 9,2-millimeter driver composed of a TPU diaphragm and a titanium membrane, nothing more and nothing less. In theory this way they will improve the bass and the melodic quality of the sound. Of course, what is clear is that Huawei has invested a lot on a technical level in these clearly miniaturized headphones, they feel quality as soon as you touch them despite the fact that the design seems to us something more focused on durability or sports, we cannot deny it .

When using it we have not found the slightest connection problem, although it is true that we have done the tests through a Huawei P30 Pro, what less. The sound quality is perhaps not as good as we had imagined, we find a total absence of bass in the event that the headphones are not correctly placed. The audio stands out for its clarity, but not for its power. However it is not a negative point, We could say that we found the sound to be expected from wireless headphones of this size, without flaunting or notable deficiencies.

Autonomy and characteristics that make them different

We find a really good autonomy that we have been able to confirm, 18 hours of uninterrupted music at medium volume on a single full charge, In our tests we have been able to achieve around 17 hours at moderately high volumes, and this is appreciated. In addition, with a simple five-minute charge through the same Huawei P30 Pro, for example, we are able to achieve four more hours of autonomy (according to the firm), although we have not had the opportunity to know if it is as exact as they say.

We have wind noise reduction to improve call quality, although we do not have any type of sound improvement through active sound cancellation more remarkable than this. The same happens with automatic activation, if we put the headphones together in collar mode we will see how the music stops, They are all facilities, and the reality is that it works perfectly, reproducing again when we separate them. At the resistance level we are IPX5, so there will be no worry to wear them when doing sports.

Editor's opinion

What I liked least about these Huawei FreeLace is that has opted for earbuds without any external grip, and that is not enough for me as a user, as they tend to fall. Although it is not a problem thanks to its fastening system on the neck. Nor has the quality of the audio convinced me considering that they are headphones of almost 100 euros.

Cons

  • The sound has left me a little "cold", I expected more
  • It seems to me that they are too long
  • They do not have a prominent grip

What I liked the most was the easy setup via USB-C that we hadn't seen before, as well as the added features like automatic playback detection. The autonomy is simply brutal and the quality of the materials is supreme.

Pros

  • Immense quality of materials and a very careful design
  • Exclusive features like auto-play and pauses
  • A never-before-seen USB-C connection system

They are shown as a very important alternative within this type of headphones, available soon in the usual points of sale from 99,99 euros, although future offers will surely be launched. They are expensive headphones, which From my point of view, they only make sense supported by the experience provided by Huawei's high-end at the level of integration with EMUI and the rest of the functionalities.
