Google stops selling its virtual reality glasses Google Cardboard

Google Cardboard

During Google I/O 2014, Google pulled out the Google Cardboard, a cardboard structure where to place a smartphone and thus be able to enjoy virtual reality and 360 videos mainly, an experiment that brought this technology closer to less well-off users.

These glasses have continued to be sold until a few days ago, since Google has hung the poster without stock, a poster that is accompanied by a message informing that this product will not be available again. Google is following the same path as Samsung a couple of years ago with the Galaxy VR.

Google Cardboards are no longer for sale in the Google Store. We continue to help the community build new experiences through ours.

Google Cardboards are made of cardboard, elastic bands and acrylic plastic lenses. They are compatible with both Android smartphones and iPhones, with models between 4 and 6 inches.

In recent times, Google had abandoned the development of their virtual reality applications in addition to having stopped selling the Deaydreams.

This creation was carried out by David Coz, a Google worker, with 20% of the time of your working day that Google allows its workers to dedicate to other ideas.

Open Source

This project became Open Source in 2019, although the Google Cardboards were still being sold in the Google Store, but clearly they had lost the initial interest to continue their development, despite the fact that it was the gateway for this technology (for its price).

Now that now that they are no longer sold through the Google Store, it is the community who takes care of launch new models compatible with smartphone models of this era (between 6 and 7 inches).
