A couple of weeks ago we met the new processor chipset Exynos 1080 from Samsung, which is one that comes with incredible capabilities and outperformed the Snapdragon 865 in benchmark tests, which turned out to be quite a feat because this Qualcomm SoC is - except for its Plus version - the most powerful yet and one that is aimed at high-end mobiles and flagships.
The event through which the new Exynos 1080 SoC was presented in style was broadcast online from Shanghai, China, due to the current pandemic that does not allow large face-to-face ceremonies. Now, the South Korean manufacturer giant has launched an official presentation video highlighting the main and salient features of the new chipset, making it clear that we are facing a piece that can with everything.
The Exynos 1080 can make your phone fly because of its speed
The promotional video for the mobile platform, which is about a minute and a half long, was posted on the YouTube platform and did not provide any new information, but we already know some interesting things about the chipset. Nevertheless, the video inflates the benefits of this machine, stating that "the 5G processor makes your phone fly", claiming that this chipset is powerful enough for any task, app and game to run smoothly on the mobile that equips it.
The new Exynos 1080 is a premium range chipset that will power the next generation of high-end 5G phones mainly from Samsung and other phone manufacturers who want to adopt Samsung's chipset technology like Vivo for example, which has already been declared as the first brand to equip this piece soon. The chipset has a built-in 5G modem and Samsung says this chipset can offer "Breakthrough" downlink speeds of up to 5.1GB / s on Sub-6GHz NR networks when operational.
The chipset has a built-in Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for artificial intelligence in the device that powers AI in tasks like image processing and more. The NPU, on the other hand, has the potential to deliver up to 5.7 TOPS (trillion operations per second) of throughput, delivering a huge leap in AI processing, according to what the firm has stated.
The promotional video also highlights that The new Exynos 1080 is one of the first chipsets to get ARM's new Cortex-A78 CPU cores. It has a 78 GHz Cortex-A2.8 core, delivering speeds that will permanently alter the face of mobile computing. The chipset also has three more Cortex-A78 cores at 2.6 GHz clock speed. In turn, the four low-power Cortex-A55 cores operate at a maximum frequency of 2.0 GHz. The SoC supports LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. The latest Mali-G78 MP10 GPU is also added for 'artistic graphics'.
Another feature of this mobile platform is that it supports HDR10 + technology and a maximum screen refresh rate of 144 Hz with FullHD + resolution.
On the other hand, this chipset is capable of supporting camera sensors up to 200 megapixelsbringing new perspectives for mobile photography with AI-powered camera functions in the Exynos 1080. The new chipset can also deliver 10K HDR4 + video recording to UHD recovery, thus also "redefining" mobile videography.
The Exynos 1080 is Samsung's first processor designed and produced in a 5nm EUV-based FinFET process, providing massive energy savings (power and heat) through low power consumption and increased efficiency, with a reduced chip size (by 25 percent) compared to the 7nm process.
Samsung says the Exynos 1080 would offer a 50 percent improvement in single-core performance, over previous processors. Also, multi-core performance could see a 100 percent increase in performance. However, Samsung's hypothesis can only be validated when the chipset becomes operational within the devices. The Exynos 1080 is projected to debut inside a Vivo smartphone in early 2021.
