Doubts arise about the quality of the Essential PH-1's dual camera after the publication of some blurry photos

Essential PH-1

The Essential PH-1's camera capabilities were recently called into question after Essential Company President Niccolo de Masi posted on Twitter several photos taken with the device that point to poor camera performance in certain situations. .

Two of Masi's tweets have already been deleted and showed a couple of photos taken in a city during sunset, but unlike photos that can be taken with other high-quality smartphones, the PH-1 captures look a lot noisy and they lack detail both in the shadows and in the brightest places, mainly because the Essential PH-1 software did not correctly expose the scene, leading to the blurry images that we have attached in this post.

In case you still don't know the technical specifications of the Essential PH-1, this device created by Android founder Andy Rubin has several features that make it stand out from the rest, including a rear dual camera with two 13-megapixel sensors with f / 1.85 aperture, one of which captures photos only monochrome (black and white), while the other is an RGB sensor.

The two cameras of the Essential PH-1 work together in order to deliver higher quality images compared to the photos that can be achieved with single-lens mobiles, although it seems that this only happens in theory since in practice the photos are worse than expected.

The Essencial PH-1's monochrome sensor or the software that controls it is probably to blame for the final look these photos have, as it has overexposed the bright spots, while the shadows are completely lacking in detail. However, the noise that can be observed in both photos is not the fault of a specific sensor, but of both sensors simultaneously, which points to the limitations of these cameras and their low performance, at least when it comes to photos taken in low light conditions.

It remains to be seen how the photos taken during the day with the Essential PH-1 turn out, although we assume that in that case the results will be more favorable.
