YouTube will allow us to set a default video quality on Android

YouTube app

Far from being satisfied with the large number of options that YouTube already offers us, the guys from Google continue to work on adding new functions to improve, even more, the experience for users. One of the functions that will arrive in future updates will be the possibility of setting the quality of the videos by default.

YouTube usually automatically set video quality that is reproduced on the device according to the speed of the connection, so that if the quality is weak, the video is reproduced but in the lowest possible quality. If the connection is good, it is reproduced in the best possible quality.

Google is testing a new feature that will allow us set a default quality when we play videos on YouTube, so as long as the quality is available in the video, they will all be played in that quality.

If we regularly use YouTube from a data connection, it is best to set a medium playback quality, so that the data of our rate does not run out quickly, especially if our data rate is not very generous.

When this new function is available, we will have 4 options at our disposal:

  • Data saving (low quality 480 or less)
  • Highest image quality (720 or more)
  • Automatic (YouTube is based on connection quality)
  • Advanced (the user with the appropriate knowledge will be able to choose the configuration that he wants to use).

These settings will be available for each video, but best of all, we will be able to set this setting by default forever and we will not have to worry about quality when we regularly consume videos through mobile data.

In the application settings, we find a playback quality menu that allows us to independently set the video quality both over data connections and over a WiFi connection, allowing us to establish a different configuration for each type of connection, but not one jointly.
