Google has characterized itself in recent years for two reasons: not maintaining some of its services (no matter how popular they were) and for continually renaming some of them. The last example, if we talk about applications / services that have changed their name, we find it in Google Play Music, service that was renamed YouTube Music.
YouTube Music was launched in 2018 and has coexisted with Google Play Music ever since. Over the past year, Google has been making the transition to the new name, although at the moment, many are the functionalities that have been left by the way. Meanwhile, the YouTube Music app has exceeded 500 million downloads.
As is customary in most Google applications that reach a large number of downloads, they are originated because are included natively in the corresponding Android version. In the case of YouTube Music, it is installed natively from Android 10 and above.
Although both applications continue to coexist, as the months went by, users probably adopted YouTube Music as a substitute for Google Play Music, so the number of downloads will increase. It is also likely that some users, tired of switching to Google, choose to use other applications.
