Android is the number one operating system right now, thanks in part to the fact that it is open source. Thanks to this we can make countless modifications to our mobile.

Many times we want to get our hands on our mobile but we do not understand some words since they are new to us. That is why today we bring you an Android dictionary so that we no longer have any excuse to be able to get our hands on our smartphone.

  • ADB - It is a tool that we will find in the Android SDK, it allows us to fiddle with our smartphone.
  • APK - It is the extension of Android applications, any file that has this extension will be executable on our smartphone.
  • Backup - Backup of the system, applications or data.
  • Bootloader - It is the boot manager of our smartphone, it is in charge of loading the Operating System. Many smartphones come with the bootloader locked so that we cannot install custom roms. Releasing it gives us the power to install any ROM, Kernel, System or partition on the phone. We have a tutorial on how to officially unlock the Sony Xperia bootloader.
  • Brig - Unserviceable state in which an electronic device remains when any of its critical components, such as its firmware or bootloader, have been inappropriately altered in such a way that it is not possible to return them to their normal operating state.
  • Downgrade - It is to download the version of our Operating System.
  • firmware - It is the version of our Operating System. We can modify it by flashing.
  • Flash - It is to install a new Operating System on our smartphone. We have a tutorial on how to flash the Sony Xperia.
  • Kernel - It is the heart of the Operating System. It is responsible for the software and hardware of your computer can work together.
  • Launcher - It is our home screen and application drawer where we have our applications, widgets and others. We can install an infinity of alternative launchers on our smartphone from the Play Store.
  • MHL - It is a protocol that converts the MicroUSB output of our smartphone to HDMI through an adapter. It is being implemented by high-end smartphones.
  • OTA – It means “Over The Air”. It is the way that manufacturers provide updates to the Operating System. They come directly to our smartphone without having to connect it to the PC.
  • OTG - It means "On The Go". It is a type of MicroUSB output that allows us to connect pen drives, hard drives, game console controls, etc. to our smartphone.
  • Radio - They are the drivers of the smartphone. It controls the mobile hardware and communicates it with the system.
  • Recovery - It is a menu where we can modify parts of the system. We can apply MODS, erase data (WIPE), install ROMS, make BACKUPS, etc.
  • ROM - It is the complete Operating System of our device. It can be the one that comes from the factory with the mobile, or it can be a custom ROM. This will have modifications added by developer users, also called cooks.
  • Root - Android systems are usually locked in such a way that we cannot touch their 'roots'. Rooting gives us access to these roots so that we can modify the operating system at will (Always with MUCH care). Basically it is as if Microsoft Windows came to us with the folder 'C: Windows' blocked so that we cannot touch it, and we access it.
  • SDK - It is a toolkit provided by Google to be able to make modifications to the system or develop applications.

If you know of a concept that has not been included and you think it is necessary, do not hesitate to leave it in the comments.
