Vivo X90 Pro: In-depth camera test

What was promised is a debt, and here we leave you the in-depth analysis of the cameras of the new device with which Vivo wants to take its place within the high-end of mobile telephony, we talk, as it could not be otherwise, about the new Vivo X90 Pro, so if you missed our in-depth review, now's a good time to check it out.

Now sit down and discover with us what the cameras of the new Vivo X90 Pro are like, a device that promises spectacular sensations in this section. We put their four sensors against the ropes, will they measure up?

According to the prestigious analysis website Dxomark, the camera of the Vivo X90 Pro is positioned at No. 16 among all the smartphones currently available, which is not bad if we take into account that this ranking is mainly dominated by Huawei, Honor and Apple devices.

If we put the price on one side of the scale and the result on the other, Probably this Vivo X90 Pro is the one that offers the most balanced result taking into account the above.

photographic software

As for the software, and as we already mentioned in the same section of the general review, we are slightly disappointed. The camera doesn't display information consistently, uses up to three or four different sources, and isn't intuitive. For example: The zoom is fantastic, but using it is a real torture.

We have a multitude of automatic modes:

  • Sports
  • Evening
  • Picture
  • Pro
  • More: Hi-Res – Panoramic – Scan – Timelapse – SlowMotion – Dual…etc
  • Zeiss Natural Color

The options are overwhelming and unintuitive, though the standard photo shoot is simple and very fast. In the end, I decided to let the device's Artificial Intelligence work, which is minimally invasive and very effective.

The Vivo X90 module has a Zeiss T* anti-reflective treatment, I couldn't say if the effect of light really affects to a lesser extent than other high-end terminals, which have their own treatments, although I also have to say that it works as promised.

Main sensor

The standard and most important sensor of this Vivo X90 Pro is a Sony IMX989 type CMOS (OIS) and that has an aperture f/1.75. To get the job done, it consists of a pixel size of 1,6 nanometers, as well as a pixel-binning from 1-4 (2×2), that is, it does a pixel binning to multiply the resolution.

The size of the sensor, something very important when it comes to capturing lighting and offering better results, is one inch, relatively considerable.

At the level of exposure and color, the main sensor captures lighting very well in almost all areas, offering a good representation. However, It suffers from problems with autofocus, we imagine that due to the software it uses.

In this sense, the main sensor is very good, even when we talk about photography in adverse lighting conditions, either by excess or by default. Captures dynamic range well.

portrait camera

Very focused on the section of portraits, This Vivo X90 Pro mounts a 50/1-inch 2.51MP sensor, manufactured by Sony (IMX758) that offers an f/1.6 aperture and that it is stabilized (OIS).

It is soon said that a terminal with these characteristics has such a complete and spectacular depth sensor, when many firms choose to relegate this sensor to a basic one with much less functionality.

The result? The one that can be expected, one of the best experiences in terms of portrait mode that we can imagine. The images are captured in great detail, even with animals, where these types of sensors tend to have problems. The interpretation of the image, color and lighting has been more than correct.

Ultra Wide Angle

Lastly, the Ultra Wide Angle with a 663MP IMX12 sensor is the first drop in performance, without detracting from the good work it does in favorable lighting conditions. We have an f/2.0 aperture for a pixel size of 1,22 nanometers. It offers good focus, good color rendition, but considerably less detail than the aforementioned sensors.

For obvious reasons, this sensor suffers in poor lighting conditions, and although the device's software tries to improve it, the noise is more than evident when we take pictures in low light. For the rest, we have a sensor of more than acceptable quality.

Frontal camera

Its "freckle" type camera located in the central part of the screen, mounts a 5MP Samsung S2KGD32 sensor, with an f/2.45 aperture and ISOCELL type. We have a good result in terms of taking selfies, it does not suffer too much in adverse lighting conditions, although the brightness of the screen plays a fundamental role.

Taking portraits, as in almost all Asian terminals, suffers from a lot of intrusion from correction software, creating a superficial and unreal image of the surface of the face, which on the other hand, is what most users are looking for.

Video recording

Video recording with the Vivo X90's main sensor is sublime, image stabilization puts it a notch below the iPhone 14 Pro, but on par with the competition, compared at least to the latest releases from Honor and Samsung.

color interpretation, the absence of micro-cuts or flanks, and the ease of use, have made the recording experience with this Vivo X90 Pro satisfactory to say the least. Recording is precisely where most devices tend to languish, and this Vivo X90 Pro does not.

  • movie mode
  • HDR10 +
  • teleprompter
  • Stabilizer
  • Level

It includes several stabilization modes, as well as the option of record in maximum resolutions of 8K at 24FPS.

In short, the Vivo X90 Pro offers high performance in terms of photography, leaves nothing to be desired and directly stands up to the high-end devices available on the market. It is clear that it is handled a step below the current Huawei, Samsung, Honor and iPhone, but the price is a factor to consider.
