Ubuntu running on a Motorola Atrix

From the XDA forum they bring us a thread in which an Ubuntu MOD for the Motorola Atrix is being developed. The process is somewhat long and complicated to solve some Bugs. Nothing recommended for non-expert Android users, and of course, GNU / Linux. Already in the post, at the beginning, they warn of the possibility of a 'brick' (blocking) for which only the user who experiments with his phone is responsible.

You seem to be trying solve improve some problems they have in the ROM:

  • Improve the environment inside the Motorola.
  • Increase free space after installation (currently only 80mb left). Which makes installing programs useless.
  • Create a new environment based on GNU / Linux.
  • Some problems installing programs, with apt-get / aptitude (easy to fix).

The installation process is done through the console. The creator advises to use LXTerminal for the process, although you can use any other. You will have to follow the steps carefully since you will have to modify 'sensitive' things in the heart of Ubuntu. It will be necessary to copy part of the system, mount it and then install it. Later we will have to install a number of packages such as dbus, pulseaudio, udev or xorg. After a large number of commands and movement of files and folders, we will largely have Ubuntu installed. But without installing programs, it is of little use. They do not comment on the operation of the parts of the phone, such as sound, bt, or wifi.

It does not seem like a 100% functional ROM, but this opens a lot of doors to the development of a GNU / Linux as is for some terminals. As with the Nokia N900, carrying a distribution based on Debian or any other distribution would be an advantage in terms of developing and incorporating programs that already exist for the desktop. Given the trend of Gadgets, increasingly powerful and more portable, perhaps this is the new way, mobile devices, although the PC of a lifetime remains there.

Is this a good development path? Would it be better to focus on Honeycomb?

About 1 year ago there was a tutorial to run ubuntu on android, which I tested on the Milestone 1 I had, it ran quite laggy, just after having it overclocked to more than 900 mhz it started to run a little more fluid….

I think we can only see Ubuntu running in our washing machine (and I think that day will come). Hahaha.
