The Snapdragon 865 has already been presented: what does it have to offer?

Snapdragon 865 official

Qualcomm has already announced its most powerful processor to date, which is presented as the successor to the Snapdragon 855 and 855 Plus. The chipset we are talking about is the Snapdragon 865, Clear!

This new processor already has an official launch date, although not an exact one. At the beginning of 2020 it will be becoming official in the first smartphone on the market.

All about the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865

Snapdragon 865

First of all, it should be noted that The Snapdragon 865 is a chipset that does not come with support for 5G integrated. Manufacturers who want their smartphones to have this chipset and support for the 5G network, have to also purchase the Snapdragon X55, which is Qualcomm's second-generation 5G modem. In addition to this, the American company will require that OEMs also buy the modem, so that all mobiles with this processor present compatibility with 5G networks without any exception, which makes it an exclusive solution for high-performance 5G terminals .

It has been revealed that it has Kyro 585 cores that represent a 25% increase in speed and energy efficiency, over the Snapdragon 855, and is broken down into the following cluster system:

  • Cortex-A77: 2,84 GHz main CPU + 3 x 2,4 GHz performance CPU.
  • Cortex-A55: 4 x CPUs dedicated to 1,8 GHz efficiency.

The GPU that is implanted in the SoC is the Adreno 650, which also represents a 25% speed increase over previous processor generations, and a 35% increase in energy efficiency. To this must be added features such as Elite Gaming, focused on improving graphic quality and providing a greater dose of realism in the reproduction of content. Support for HDR and HDR10 + in games for displays up to 144 Hz refresh rate is also added. The processor that helps even further match and power things up is the Hexagon 698.

The ISP that we see in this new generation is the ISP Spectra 480. It offers support for recording in 4K HDR, 8K or photos up to 200 megapixels. This, in turn, will not represent a significant energy consumption, since the efficiency of the chipset in this section is very high, so there will be no overheating or other mishap due to its operation. In addition, there will also be support for recording slow motion (slow motion) at 960 frames per second in high resolution and HDR recording with Dolby Vision ready to be seen on large screens.

Of course, just like its predecessor, the Snapdragon 865 is also capable of offering support for HDR10 +, 4K HDR video capture with portrait mode, and an ISP with computer vision.

Snapdragon 865

Artificial intelligence is another section that is not neglected in this new high-power solution, quite the opposite: it is improved. The Snapdragon 865 comes with Qualcomm's fifth generation AI engine, twice as powerful as its predecessor, providing a throughput of 15 trillion operations per second, 3 MB of system cache and with support for LPDDR4 (2.133 MHz) and LPDDR5 (2.750 MHz). This new AI engine is superior to its predecessor, in terms of power and range, by 35%, which is saying a lot. Therefore, the processing of photos, among many other things, will be much better, thus being much more precise when capturing the portrait mode of the objects for a much more exact and better precision (we will see how this also works in difficult situations).

On the other hand, the neural processing SDK has been updated, which together with the functions of components such as the AI Model Enhancer and the Hexagon NN Direct gives developers greater freedom and flexibility to create faster and more complete applications (in relation to the AI).

Regarding Bluetooth, Qualcomm aptXTM Voice technology enables much clearer audio, lower latency, and better connectivity from wireless headphones, all while taking care of energy consumption.
