Samsung paints the wraparound display for future phones without bezels

It can be said quite that 2018 was the year of the smartphone -almost- no bezels. Now that we're at the end of the year, we can definitely say that we've seen some impressive bezel-busting designs this year, including those of the OPPO Find X and the Vivo NEX. However, there is always some bezel left somewhere on the screen and a true 100 percent screen-to-body ratio has yet to be achieved.

Interestingly, a application for a new Samsung patent online that promises a screen that fits on all edges of a device. At least, that's what the poor-quality images presented by Samsung in the patent seem to show.

The patent published by WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) clearly shows a flexible display. The panel snaps to the left and right, and even to the top and bottom, without leaving a trace of any bevels. The low quality image shows icons placed even on the edges.

Unfortunately, the images provided by Samsung are too poor to do anything and furthermore, the filing is merely for a utility patent, not for design. In addition, this solution seems to create more questions than answers, such as the problem of edge detection, the placement of vital sensors, among others. Independently, Leadsgodigital has created conceptual images based on these patents and they look awesome.

For the moment, frameless displays seem to be the futureas Samsung is preparing to reveal its Galaxy S10 devices next year. However, this new patent design appears to be far from finished. If Samsung is working on a latest bezel-less phone, we probably won't see it anytime soon. For now, we'll have to stay happy with the Infinity-O displays and flexible OLED panels.
