The curved screens of the Galaxy S7 Edge or Galaxy S8 have great appeal for consumers, but it seems that Samsung wants to take things even further and is preparing to develop a screen with all curved edges.
Several reports from Korea indicate that Samsung is working on a display without bezels that will have all curved edges, including the top and bottom.
The technological challenges of Samsung and LG
Samsung and LG must overcome several technological hurdles to be able to implement fully curved displays in their next flagships. The biggest problem of all is apparently related to the lamination process, so that we will still have to wait at least a couple of years to see some phones with this type of screen.
According to reports, when a screen lacks frames and is curved on all four sides, its four corners become useless, since the lamination process would nullify the possibility of incorporating touch sensors in those areas.
The lamination process is essential for the manufacture of OLED displaysas it includes the protective layer and touch film, apart from other components. Apparently one of the main reasons Apple decided to adopt flat OLED displays for the iPhone 8 it is specifically the lamination process, which entails several problems.
Samsung is expected to fix this until next year and announce a smartphone with all four curved edges soon after, although we doubt that that device is the one. Galaxy S9, but you never know.
The Galaxy S8 recently hit the market with an 83% screen-to-body ratio, but the company wants to achieve a higher aspect ratio and virtually unnoticeable bezels for its next flagship.
On the other hand, LG is also working on the new curved screen technology, but it is not yet known whether the LG G7 or other company smartphones could incorporate it next year.
