Root the Samsung Galaxy S (GT-i9000), with 2.3.3 Gingerbread

Samsung Galaxy S with Gingerbread ROOT

Since we published the article with the method to flash the leaked ROM (codenamed XXJVK) of 2.3.3 Gingerbread for the GT-i9000, many have asked about the method to obtain the Root access with this version.

In this article we are going to show it step by step.

Before we start, we have to download the kernel rooted (patched to have root access) in this link: CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVK-v2.7-CWM3RFS.zip. Courtesy of the guys at XDA-Developers.

This rooted kernel is for the beginner to root, very basic. The Kernel CF-Root It is taken directly from the original Samsung firmware, to which only Root access, Busibox, an unprotected Recovery and compatible with ClockWorkMode. Maintains the Maximum compatibility with original Samsung firmware for the GT-i9000, the XXJVK.

If what you are looking for is a kernel optimized with lagfix and other functions, you still have to wait a bit to have a stable one.

THIS IS NOT A ROM (To install the ROM 2.3.3 Gingerbread compilation XXJVK for the Samsung Galaxy S see the previous tutorial). This it's just the kernel. Therefore, before installing this kernel, you must have previously installed the full ROM by the method already indicated in that tutorial. For this patched kernel you will not need to do a wipe (factory reset).

I will repeat it again, and I will not get tired, although at this point, you must have already flashed the ROM and before that, have made the appropriate checks:
- THE BATTERY MUST BE FULLY CHARGED.
- MAKE SURE THAT THE KEYS COMBO WORKS IN YOUR TERMINAL TO ENTER THE DOWNLOAD MODE (Home + Power ON + Volume Down).

Follow these instructions at the bottom of the letter and do not touch any other button or check any other box than those indicated:

  1. - Unzip the CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVK-v2.7-CWM3RFS.zip file. You will get the CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVK-v2.7-CWM3RFS.tar file.
  2. - Disconnect the mobile from your PC (USB).
  3. - Open the ODIN program (You should already have it from when you flashed the full ROM, I have used version 1.7).
  4. - Click on the button called «PDA», and select the file CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVK-v2.7-CWM3RFS.tar, which is the result of unzipping the .zip.
  5. - Turn your mobile on Download mode.
  6. - Connect the mobile to your PC with the microUSB cable.
  7. - Make sure that The "Re-Partition" box is NOT checked. No matter what you've heard out there, DO NOT check that box. NO need to redistribute.
  8. - Now press the Odin's "START" button.
  9. - Wait for the mobile restarts. Don't touch anything else. In about 30 seconds it should start booting.
  10. - There, you already have Root Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread on your Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9000!

Odin Installing Kernel Rooted XXJVK

WARNING: It doesn't always work the first time, don't despair. So you may have to repeat the process until the end is able to load the Rooted kernel. It worked for me on the fourth try. 😉

You will have exactly the ROM XXJVK with Root access, without lagfix, or other extras that kernels like Voodoo usually bring.

IMPORTANT !!: Before flashing ROM or Kernel, the following points must be taken into account:
- Make Backup of Apps and data with Titanium Backup.
- Make a backup copy of the folder «/ efs». With Root Explorer or Terminal Emulator
- Check that the Download Mode and Recovery Mode work with the "Home + Power + Volume Down" key combo.

Remember: You will do all this at your own risk. If you are not sure, you better not do it and wait for the Official update to arrive via Kies Samung.

Hahaha root access has not been slow to come out… .. You are very good, keep it up

  3.   lander said

One question, in case you want to unroot it, do you know which Kernel should be installed?

    1.    Trimax said

Yes, exactly the same as you got with the new ROM. Remember? In the installation of the new ROM 2.3.3 we flashed 3 files:
      -PDA
      -PHONE
      -CSC

Well, to do the reverse process of removing the root. You just have to follow this same procedure but with the original -PDA file from the ROM: PDA_XXJVK.tar.md5

That is why I like this method, because it is totally reversible.

      Greetings.

      1.    lander said

Aha, that's what I supposed. But if I put the PDA that I already put into it, would it lose the issue of applications? I say this because it is very thick if I remember correctly. Or if I put it without marking the re-partition, nothing would happen?
Anyway, I have a backup with my backup and another with Titanium, but it is to know more than anything.

        Thank you

      2.    ascalaphus said

I have the gingerbread from movistar 2.3.3, can I root with this method if more? Do I lose any of what I have on my mobile installed?
        Thank you

  4.   lander said

Sorry for the double post, but another question has arisen. Do you have the Galaxy S? Have you tried to put some lagfix with this version? If so, which one?

It's that I've been looking at the Voodoo but they still haven't put anything beyond Froyo and well, you can always pull the OCLF, but hey, if you have any other recommendations, better than better. Although I really have to say that this ROM is much better for me than the previous Froyo with the OCLF; regardless of whether I scored less in the Quadrant.

    Houston, Houston…
I just upgraded from kies to gingerbread. To restore a copy of titanium I have to root. I have followed this method and when I get to restart everything ok, the media scanner starts and suddenly the screen turns off and you get the movistar logo and start again, like this over and over again… What do I do ????

  14.   cinemax said

The same thing happens to me as Pepe, I have updated by kies to gingerbread, it has been to do the method and pass this on to me. I do not know what to do I have tried to restore from factory and it does not work.

    1.    Pepe said

Still not working after factory restore and all recovery mode wipes. What a bad time I had!

In the end I downloaded Froyo and installed it with odin, this way I got it to work again, then I downloaded gingerbread and the root file from another page and everything worked fine. I leave you the link in case it helps you: http://www.htcmania.com/showthread.php?t=188562

      1.    cinemax said

Thank you very much, I will try and tell you

      2.    cinemax said

A doubt Pepe, after putting Froyo with Odin, how did you put Gingerbread, with Odin or with Kies? From the link you send me it seems that you have already passed the Movistar one, right?

        1.    Pepe said

When I installed Froyo, the kies no longer recognized the Gingerbread update, so I did it with Odin for not moving again and starting with the same problems ...

          1.    cinemax said

            Thanks I'll do it.

            1.    cinemax said

In the end what I did was put an official version of Eclair by Odin, and then I updated to Froyo by Kies, in Froyo I put the backup of Titanium and immediately afterwards I updated to Gingerbread by kies the official of Movistar, it gave me a bit of a stick about the warranty and stuff. The truth is that when you told me that you had fixed it, you gave me a lot of peace of mind. Thank you very much, what a scare we've been through.

  15.   Pepe said

    Glad you fixed it too.

    All the best

  16.   cinemax said

Do not be overwhelmed that if it has happened to you like me and Pepe has a solution. What you have to do is put a rom for Odin, it is very easy but you have to read carefully any tutorial that there are in many places, this one that I put seems simple
http://www.samsunggalaxys.es/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=984, here I put a link to roms
    http://www.samsunggalaxys.es/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=1140&p=9573#p9573
This version of rom was the one I used
    Official version movistar eclair:

Rest assured that it has a fix, read this tutorial or another that you find carefully, check before you can enter downloading mode, turning off the mobile (remove the battery) and press the buttons at the same time: volume down, central button and power (better press the first two first and then on). If you get the downloading mode you will not have a problem. Cheer up
