Telegram is one of the instant messaging applications most popular on Android, WhatsApp's main rival. Many users use it to talk with friends, family or colleagues, in individual or group chats. This application allows us to delete those chats that we have, as well as messages that we send in those conversations. We may have deleted something by mistake, so let's find a way to recover conversations on Telegram.
Being able to delete chats in the app is very useful, but there are also times when we have deleted a chat by mistake, for example we have deleted the wrong chat. The good news is that it is possible to recover conversations in Telegram if we have previously made their respective backup, so this problem can be solved. We tell you how it will be possible to do this in our account in the messaging app.
Messages on Telegram
In Telegram we were allows you to delete any message that we have sent or received, be it text, multimedia files (photos or videos), documents or even GIFs and stickers. This is something that applies to all the conversations we have in the application, whether individual or group, as well as in their secret chats. Besides being possible to delete an entire conversation as well.
This feature is undoubtedly something very useful, but with which we must be careful, since if we have deleted a specific message by mistake or we have deleted the wrong chat, we are facing a notable problem. Recovering conversations in Telegram is something possible, but the process is more complex than in other applications in this same field. This messaging application does not save conversations locally, nor are they stored in the cloud, only on the firm's servers.
That is why care must be taken when we are going to delete messages or conversations from the app. The process to recover conversations on Telegram is somewhat longer than many would like. Luckily, we have a number of ways we can do this, so that we can have those messages or conversations available in our Android app again. Surely there is a way that fits what you need.
Restore a backup of your Telegram conversations
Backups are very useful on Android, also in messaging applications. If we have made a backup of our conversations in the application, it is a positive point, because we can then restore those chats. Although it is good to know that this option to recover conversations in Telegram is available only for its web version or the application for computer, the so-called Telegram Desktop. The desktop version of the app syncs with your Android app, then showing all your chats directly on the screen, as it will ask you to enter the phone number associated with the Android app. So you can use it at all times. In addition, this version does not depend on the mobile, so you will be able to use it also when you want to send messages without having your mobile available at some point. This is the version that we will use to make the backup, as well as its restoration.
Backup
The first thing we will have to do in this case is to make that backup copy of our chats in Telegram. Something that we are going to do in the PC version of this application, as we have mentioned. The process to make this backup in Telegram is not complicated, but it is good to know the exact steps that we have to follow.
First you will have to open Telegram from the application (not from the PC) and once the app has been opened, click on the three horizontal stripes that are the ones that will open the side menu of the app. In this side menu we have a series of options available and we are going to click on Settings. Once inside the settings we go to the Advanced section, where we will look for the option called Data and Storages, and there you must select "Export Telegram data".
They will then appear on the screen a series of options that we can select, which are the ones that can be included in said backup copy of the messaging application. The application allows us at all times to choose what data we want to include, so we must take some time and read each option, to determine what we consider should not be missing in said backup. Each one should select what they think is appropriate. Once we have marked those options that we are going to include in this copy, we also click on the box that says human-readable HTML, which is what will make those conversations read in Telegram after restoring.
Then we only have to click on Export. Then this backup of your chats will be generated in the app. This is where all the chats and items that you have selected in this process are stored. We can then move between these folders and see at all times the messages that have been sent in them, as well as the files, so we will not have lost any information.
Retrieve messages from a Telegram chat
We may have deleted a message in an individual chat in the application, something that may happen or we have deleted a specific conversation by mistake. In these cases you can resort to the Undo option when something is going to be deleted, which is undoubtedly something that will save us from this type of problem in messaging applications. The Undo option is something that will come out when we want to delete an entire chat. It is a function that works in the Android and iOS versions of the messaging application.
It is something very useful and helpful, but it requires us to be quick. Since actually We only have five seconds from the deletion of said message until any of those conversations in Telegram can be restored. When we have deleted a chat in the app, we will see that the Undo option appears on the screen, along with a countdown. So if we have realized our mistake, we can use it to restore those messages.
This is something that can save us in case you have made a mistake in the application, but that requires acting quickly, as you can see. In addition, this is something that we can only use in the application on Android and iOS. The computer version or the web version of the app do not have this Undo option (at least for now). This means that if you delete a conversation in these versions, you will not be able to recover it.
Notification log
This last option that we can use is not exactly a way to recover conversations on Telegram, but it is another way to see messages that we have deleted on Android again. Since in Android 11 we have a registry of notifications available, where we can see all the notifications that we have received on the phone, including those Telegram messages that we have deleted, for example. So it is a way to re-read that message that we may have missed.
This is an option that is presented as a good way to retrieve or rewatch a specific message. If we have deleted a message by mistake, we can always look for the Notification History in the phone settings. There we are shown the notifications in chronological order, with the most recent at the top. We can then search for the notifications that we have received from Telegram and find that specific message that we are looking for. You will not get that message back, but at least we will be able to read it again without any problem.
It is good to know that if you delete a message in Telegram, that message will not be deleted, unlike what happens in other apps like WhatsApp. In this case, if someone sends us a message and it is deleted, a notification appears indicating that the message in question has been deleted. Luckily this is not the case on Telegram, where that message is deleted and leaves no trace, it simply disappears from the chat we have with another person. Notifications are therefore a good way to see that message again, since that message will not be deleted from the Android notification history. You will have to have a phone with Android 11 or Android 12 to be able to access this notification history and thus see that message deleted in Telegram.
