Phone memory full? Where have all those MB / GB of my device gone?

One of the most recurring questions from users of Androidsis in our Forum is

Why, if my Smartphone or Tablet has X MB / GB of memory, I only have a small part of it to install applications? Why does my memory fill up so fast if my Android device has X GB?

Today I am going to explain the reason for this event and it has a name: PARTITIONS.

Android makes partitions on the "hard drive" of the device in a similar way to Linux (Android is based on Linux). Each partition stores a series of information independently:

  • /boat. Contains the data necessary to boot the Android device.
  • /recovery. Contains an alternate boot. Accessing this boot we can find advanced options for our device (delete factory applications, install new ROMS, etc.).
  • /system. The operating system and applications that come from the factory are stored in this partition.
  • /cache. Stores temporary operating system information.
  • /misc. Stores important configuration data.
  • /date. This is the partition that interests us. This is where the applications we download and install and your data are stored.

That is why if for example our device is 512MB, we only have about 100MB to install applications. Since the rest of memory is partitioned and each partition stores a series of important data for the operating system and the device.

But all this is about to change. As Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich version will work with a single partition (as long as the manufacturer does not modify it).

So if our device has 8GB of space for example, we will have all that space available to install the applications (minus the space required for the operating system and settings).

Note: Partitioning memory is nothing more than dividing it in a virtual way. Being each partition or part of independent use.
Note 2: I have put "hard disk" with quotes, since the Smartphone and Tablet do not contain a hard disk like computers, but a solid disk or SSD.

Even if I changed the words, the information would be that, so that's fine, and in any case you don't know if the "copy and paste" was done by those from androidsis or they did it in that other place where you saw it… so shhh

That ICS uses a single partition does not mean that if we have 8Gb of internal memory we will have those 8Gb available ... as it says right there in the note, there is a part that the system needs for its files and configurations ... and that part is used so much WITH or WITHOUT partitions.
Therefore for me it is the same, the space that we are going to have available will be the same (perhaps a little more in ICS since there will be no free space without being able to be used in the other partitions).

I have a smartphone with 16 GB of ROM memory and it won't let me store files when the 1,27 GB capacity (of memory, not files) is exceeded. On the other hand, in my nokia n97 mini, with 8 gb of internal memory, I had no problem putting 3-4 gb in files. I do not understand.

    1.    Migue said

when you mean storing files is it installing applications or storing as a USB device?

Doesn't anyone notice? It is incredible how people are unaware of what the companies that manufacture smartphones are doing, we are already in an advanced year and theoretically there should be no internal memories of 8gb, they do not remember that the nokia n95 (I am talking about this cell phone because It was well known) it brought 8gb in a version, everything is purposeful so that we have to renew the smartphone every certain amount of time, they manufacture cell phones of 8 and 16gb (and less too) so that in the short term their memory is filled, achieving That way the cell phone lowers its performance and they end up like the majority of users that I see in the comments complaining that the memory is full, that they cannot install an application, etc., and if you want to buy a 64GB smartphone, which theoretically today It is not too much, it costs you a lot of money and it would not only be that, but also that sometimes they partition your memory and you only use 16gb or 32gb for applications and the excess of the GB as if it were a mic ro sd, I mean only for photos, videos and music, unfortunately smartphone companies abuse themselves and take advantage of the lack of knowledge of many people to continue selling smartphones with low memory, greetings to all and this comment is for many to open the mind of what happens and look well which smartphone to buy

I have a Tablet with twelve gigabytes of memory, but I installed too many applications and used up all the memory, the launcher started to stop working, so I decided to restart it and now it does not turn on, it stays loading infinitely. Is there something that can be done?

      good day

To give a solution, you must enter the recovery mode, do a wipe cache and if the novelty persists, enter the recovery again and do a wipe factory (format).
