This is the development of Oppo's invisible on-screen camera technology

A new trend will emerge in the world of smartphones soon. This will be the implementation of "Invisible cameras" on screen, and Oppo is one of the already confirmed to use it in its future mobiles.

The company has long been interested in it and, consequently, started studying and developing this technology in early 2017, according to an Oppo engineer, who has also detailed some of the firm's advances in said development.

To recall, the industry's obsession with full-screen displays really started after the launch of the Xiaomi Mi Mix in late 2016. Since then, there have been multiple solutions for a bezel-less smartphone, such as the recent emergence of pop-up front cameras. and the hole on the screen. But it is clear that the cameras under the screen, which "would be invisible and visible for convenience", are the future of smartphones, and it is only a matter of time before we see a commercial device with this technology.

Now the Oppo engineer revealed that the biggest challenge in implementing this technology is that no one has managed to do it successfully. He likens its development to crossing a river simply by feeling the stones under it, as there are numerous difficulties associated with carrying it to a commercial smartphone.

The under-screen camera has to work with other hardware flawlessly and algorithms are needed to perfect the camera experience. But if implemented correctly, will perfect the smartphone screen experience.

The engineer adds that no weight is added to the body and even the viewing area above the camera works perfectly. So there is no need for ugly notches or moving parts to provide a full screen experience.

Unfortunately, it seems that it will still take some time before any manufacturer manages to perfect the technology. We know that, like Oppo, Xiaomi and Samsung are working on a prototype, but what they revealed last week was just a development test. It is similar to how Xiaomi demonstrated the 100 watt fast charging technology at the beginning of this year. It is still in development and is a few months away from commercial launch. For now, it looks like companies will focus on tweaking pop-up camera solutions similar to what we saw on the Asus Zenfone 6.
