Google Nearby on Android suggests apps and websites based on your location

Google Nearby

Google had a good day yesterday approaching the event held in San Francisco where Lenovo presented its series of devices, among which we could find the Moto Z, Moto Z Force and the Phab 2 Pro. The latter is the reason why we saw Google talk about some of the news related to Project Tango and that we will know starting yesterday as Tango.

As these guys from Mountain View hardly rest and I doubt if they really sleep at night, they have released the Nearby feature for Android that recommends apps and websites from your current location. This functionality uses GPS and Bluetooth to open applications before you know yourself that you will need them. The problem is that it could allow detect nearby mobiles, thus presenting a privacy problem, although this should not be the case.

It will work in such a way that every time you pass near a beacon, or signal transmitter, you will receive a notification wondering if you want to be alerted in the future. You have the option to activate Nearby from the settings if you wish.

Additional

It has been Google itself that has shown some of the examples in which Nearby will be launched in order to recommend applications and websites based on where you are at that moment. These are:

  • Print images directly from your phone in a pharmacy
  • Explore historical sites in an iconic location such as the University of Notre Dame
  • Download the audio of a tourist route when you are near the Prado Museum
  • Download the app of one of the airlines when you arrive at barajas airport to entertain yourself while you wait for you to catch your flight

These are a few examples of Google Nearby and in the future it will have even more options to recommend you apps for some nearby devices such as Chromecast and Android Wear. You will receive a notification that allows you to configure them by pressing it when you are near them.

Nearby is being deployed to the whole world on Android 4.4 KitKat and higher through Google Play Services.
