Google Fiber faces opposition from neighbors

Residents of the town of San Antonio, in Texas, United States, are showing their opposition to the key infrastructure of Google Fiber.

Although the development of Google Fiber already stopped last October 2016, the company pledged to continue providing service to current cities However, with neighborhood opposition to the installation of certain essential infrastructure, construction in San Antonio faces a delay.

Specifically, we are referring to what is known as Fiber huts (something like Fiber huts or cabins), structures of about 9 meters long, 3,65 meters wide and 2,7 meters high, surrounded by a protective fence with dimensions of 9,75 x 15,2 meters approximately, where the main box of the network is housed.

With 17 of these "cabins" required to provide high-speed internet to the city of Texas, two have already been built.

These «Fiber huts» are located in the neighborhood parks, which has caused resident residents to have expressed their complaints for months, arguing that they hinder or reduce access to parks, in addition to spoiling the vision of these spaces.

Although there are no plans to remove the two existing structures, the city has put future construction on hold, in addition to failing to grant Google seven permits.

Alongside these parks and residential areas, the remaining locations include fire stations, libraries, and even a police station.

The lease agreement signed between the city of San Antonio and Google in 2015 allowed access to those sites for the construction of the Fiber huts however, now the city alleges that Google did not relay these potential complaints or inform residents of the construction plans..

At the moment, location and company are in discussions to find more appropriate locations.
