Android 7.1.1 is coming to the Nexus with the December 5 security patch

According to Vodafone Australia, the release of Android 7.1.1 for Nexus devices will coincide with the release of the security patch scheduled for December 5. Thus, the update via OTA will arrive two weeks after the second beta for Android 7.1 developers and will match the Nexos with the Pixel and Pixel XL at the software level.

Available first for the new Pixel devices, Android 7.1 made its way to the Nexus 5X and 6P and the Pixel C through a developer preview release. And although the second version was expected to add support for the rest of the devices and Android One, only the Nexus 9 made by HTC was incorporated.

The 7.1.1 version allows developers to add app shortcuts, while keyboard support introduces some functionality from Gboard to Android with input for GIFs and rich content. However, unlike the iOS app, it requires developers to specifically add support to their apps. Android 7.1 also introduces new emojis that offer a wider range of professions for women and men.

According to Vodafone notes, Google will begin rolling out the update at 17:00 AEST on December 6, 2016 however, the security update is dated December 5, coinciding with Google's usual pattern of launching on Monday.

With version 7.1.1 being more than a security patch, the OTA is a bit bigger, around 650 MB for the Nexus 6P. Vodafone provided all the exact details of this update on its Australian website.

Along with other Nexus devices, the Pixel and Pixel XL are also scheduled to receive Android 7.1.1. In addition to the typical bug fixes for various minor detected issues, Pixel update will add double tap to check phone and lift to check phone functionality.
