Chromebooks received welcome news last year when they learned that Google introduced support for the Google Play Store, which opened the window to 1 million apps for Chrome OS users. A Chrome OS that has also been said to merge with Android in Andromeda, although this was finally denied by Google itself not long ago.
There are currently three Chromebooks that allow the access to Android apps in the stable channel. These are the Acer Chromebook R11, the ASUS Chromebook Flip and the Chromebook Pixel 2015. This list will grow as the year progresses as Google offers support to a dozen Chromebooks already available on the market.
It was today, when in a update to support page For Chrome OS, Google has made it clear that all Chromebooks released in 2017 will support Android apps. So if you are about to start buying a new Chromebook, you no longer have to worry about a particular model that is compatible with the Play Store.
A great initiative by Google and for all third party developers they will have the opportunity to reach even more users and devices. This also means an extra effort for the compatibility of those Chromebook devices that will need the help of the developer so that the experience is full and well optimized.
According to IDC, Chrome OS is the second most popular operating system for PCs in the United States, in front of Mac OS and behind Windows. With the explosion of all those apps and video games available for the platform, its two direct competitors will have to find some idea to be able to counteract which will mean that you can play all those games from a Chromebook and have all those applications available. All great news.
