A future version of Android could "break" a large number of ROOT applications

ROOT

Most of the development in Android is done in an open way, which has led some Android developers to discover how a recent entry to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) could "break" quite a few ROOT applications.

One of the biggest advantages when it comes to having a smartphone or tablet with ROOT privileges is the power install important applications that extend the possibilities of our terminals by granting more "power" over them.

This irruption is due to the implementation of a security-focused feature in Android, rather than an effort by Google to block certain applications. So Chainfire, a popular developer of this type of ROOT applications, from his Google+ has detailed what will happen if the change will be integrated into a future version of Android.

To explain it a bit, some applications extract files in directories located in the / data partition and execute them as ROOT, but with this recent entry it eliminates this possibility of being able to do so. On the one hand it is good because it makes it more difficult that certain users with malicious intentions execute a «script» on the / data partition or take advantage of an «exploit» to perform the ROOT. As Chainfire explains, this change will also make certain ROOT applications not work as they used to.

There is no solution that can prevent this from happening, but there are some ways for developers to can make the applications work properly so that they carry out the same task. As there is still time for the next version of Android to be released, applications that may have a malfunction will have a few months to find a possible solution.

We can also expect an experienced developer like Chainfire bring some solution and share it with the other developers so that they can update their ROOT applications accordingly.
