Within the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) there are numerous races being fought but one of the most prominent is the one that refers to processors for mobile devices.
The Chinese company Huawei has already taken a big step by recently announcing AI-related features that will debut with the Kirin 970 processor. At the same time, Apple's newly released iPhone 8 uses the "neural engine" of its A11 chips for much more advanced processing in Artificial Intelligence. And of course, the South Korean giant Samsung could not be left behind in this segment.
According to the published information by the South Korean newspaper The Korean Herald, also the Samsung company is paying great attention to I develop cores inside the CPU specially dedicated to handling AI-related tasks. According to the newspaper, Samsung has already begun with the research and development of artificial intelligence chips and will begin to commercialize them "in the next few years."
The difference in these new Samsung AI processors compared to their typical Exynos SoCs is that rely less on cloud processing. Previous Samsung AI chips had to interact with cloud servers to retrieve information, however with this information stored locally on devices, future chips could be more efficient.
An unidentified source told The Korea Herald that “In the next three years, smartphones will have dedicated chips that improve the processing of AI functions by 50 percent«.
And although other specific advantages that these new chips could provide have not been revealed, it is very likely that among them there is also a lower power consumption.
Obviously, considering that it is the largest processor manufacturer in the world and also a developer of other products related to Artificial Intelligence (it is currently developing its mobile assistant Bixby, while it recently confirmed that it also works on its own smart speaker), it's no surprise that Samsung is jumping on the AI chip bandwagon too.
